DEFENSELESS POSITION

The Armenian politicians criticize our diplomacy for its faults, omissions and even for failures very strongly. We think that those accusations are overstated. Diplomacy is simply a technique for defending the political position of the own country. In this case our diplomats do they work as they can. The whole problem is that what is the Armenian political position in the most important Karabakh issue. The position is the following: "Karabakh has never been the part of Azerbaijan, it got independence at the same time with the destruction of the Soviet Union, consequently we have juridical controversy with Azerbaijan in connection with the status of that territory." So let the diplomat defend that position. Even if Taleiran hand-in-hand with Bismarck comes to Armenia and is appointed as the RA Minister of Foreign Affairs he won't be able to be useful to our diplomacy. As dozens of anti-arguments can be adduced against that position by request and what our enemies do. Let's mention some of them:
1. Hasn't Karabakh been the part of Azerbaijan? What is then? That territory hasn't also been the part of Armenia, Congo or Indonesia. Does it mean that it mustn't be the part of Azerbaijan?
2. Azerbaijan has become the member of the UNO, OSCE and CoE with its whole territory including Karabakh.
3. The principle of territorial integrity and inviolability of European borders was signed in Helsinki in 1975 and reaffirmed in Stambul in 1999. The President of Armenia signed the document in the second case.
4. If we have a juridical controversy we must go to the international court and try to affirm our truth and not carry on political negotiations round OSCE Minsk group. The PACE last resolution means just that.
Certainly the superpowers have taken steps during last 15 years, which oppose the principle of territorial integrity; the U.S. divided Yugoslavia and Russia did the same with Georgia. But it seems neither the U.S. nor Russia has the same program towards Azerbaijan.
"Territorial" and "juridical" elements in the political position weaken the position of Armenia and divert from the main direction of our fight. The nations can gain independence if they are attacked / as Azerbaijan did/, they have a right of self-defense, Karabakh can't be the part of Azerbaijan as it won't provide for the security and other rights of NK population. Such a position can be defended and in this case everything will depend on diplomatic skill indeed.
